Overview

While the Photon is a very capable machine, there are some undesirables that lurk in the design and just the whole system setup. Every technolgy has its drawbacks and I try to address some fixes in this page.

Smell

By far the worst part of resin printing is the resin itself. It's sticky, irritates the skin and smells. The smell can easily overtake the volume of an entire house. Here are a few improvements to help.

Intake Filter

Adding a carbon prefilter to the internal fan significantly reduces fumes to be the outside world. I designed and printed a quick one that works, but needs an upgrade. I just bought a prefilter for above a range from Home Depot and cut it up.

4" Carbon Filter with Inline Fan

This basically eliminates all odors. The downside is it takes up considerable room - but your health is worth it, right?

Neoprene Gasketing

One area that the smell can still leak out is the interface where the door meets the Photon body. Some thin adhesive backed neoprene sheet up into about 1/4" strips does a good job of mitigating the leakage.

Resin Handling

Improvements related to handling and storage of resin.

HDPE Bottles for Used Material

I'm not sure how important it is to keep used material separate from virgin material, but this can't hurt. Here is what I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0046A8Y9E

These are thin, but lab grade bottles aren't needed for storage of a little bit of resin. I only wish I could find smaller bottles, say 125ml instead of the 250ml variety.

Vat Holder

Thingiverse has a vat holder for pouring the resin from the vat. This helps quite a bit; it's like adding a third hand.

Vat Cover

Thingiverse also has a vat cover to help limit exposure to the air (and to light). It is suggested to agitate the resin, though, if you leave it in the vat for extended periods as the pigments can settle.
